Working After a Cancer Diagnosis Is A Reality For Many

By Cancer and Careers

As the number of cancer survivors in the U.S. continues to increase, there is a critical need for resources to help them manage employment after a diagnosis.

Cancer and Careers (CAC) was founded in 2001, in response to the growing recognition that there was no guidance, and few services or tools for working people with cancer.

CAC is the only national nonprofit with a mission to educate and empower people with cancer to thrive in their work environments by providing expert advice, interactive tools and educational events to patients, survivors and healthcare professionals.

All of Cancer and Careers’ resources are free-of-charge for cancer patients, survivors, healthcare professionals, caregivers and anyone else touched by cancer.

They include:

  • A comprehensive website in English and Spanish.
  • Publication library in English and Spanish.
  • Conferences on Work & Cancer.
  • Accredited trainings for healthcare and HR professionals.
  • Webinars and teleconferences for patients, survivors and caregivers.
  • Job search workshops.
  • Micro-grants for professional development.
  • Resume review and an Online Career Coaching Center.

The organization’s programs help patients and survivors get organized, create action plans, manage treatment side effects at work, make decisions about disclosure, understand their legal rights in the workplace, get back to work after taking time off and navigate the job search process—and are available at any point in their cancer journey.

CAC also provides critical information and guidance for managers and co-workers to help them understand the challenges that employees with cancer face in the workplace and how they can offer the best support.

Cancer and Careers’ programs and events reach a large national audience. Online, in print and in person, CAC helps more than 525,000 individuals each year, across all 50 states.
