Shorter Time Receiving SSDI Benefits is Associated with Return to Work Success

For individuals living with severe mental illness, a shorter amount of time receiving Social Security disability benefits could mean greater success in future employment.  A new study in Psychiatry Research says additional supportive factors include a more recent work history, greater cognitive functioning and a lower local unemployment rate.

“We understand that the sooner people return to work, the greater their chance of maintaining employment and increasing their income,” said Paula Morgan, Allsup Employment Services Senior Technical Specialist. “Needing and obtaining SSDI benefits does not necessarily mean you will never work again. If your medical condition stabilizes, knowing your options and how to best use your benefits prepares you to pursue your employment goals as soon as you are able.”

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, on average, replace only about half of past earnings, for the median SSDI beneficiary. By utilizing the free services available through the Social Security Administration’s Ticket to Work program, SSDI beneficiaries can explore returning to work without fear of losing their benefits.

Allsup Employment Services is a Social Security-approved Employment Network and helps SSDI beneficiaries access all the incentives available to them. Call (866) 540-5105 or email to learn how the Ticket to Work program can improve your financial future.
